After visiting the refugee camps and primary schools in Islamabad, Pakistan, and seeing firsthand how children of different birthplaces have their lives disrupted by war and poverty, I was deeply moved!
The dilapidated refugee camp was surrounded by rags, lacking basic living facilities such as water and electricity. The refugee children relied on begging and scavenging for a living. They truly witnessed the struggles and resilience of the refugee children, as well as their longing for education and the cruel reality that tore them apart.
The dilapidated refugee school has 4 classrooms. Two of them lack desks, chairs, blackboards and teaching aids. There is no water, no electricity and no toilet. Younger students have to sit on damp and cold ground. The learning environment is extremely harsh. There is only 1 teacher for 110 students.
On the fence, the longing and hopeful eyes of the refugee children for going to school were heartbreaking yet inspiring.
The realization from this visit to the refugee camps and schools was that education in a disaster situation is not a luxury, but rather a bandage for stopping the bleeding and a blueprint for reconstruction.
We sincerely ask everyone to lend a helping hand and assist them!
Let the light of hope shine upon the refugee children!
